Rumyantsev Garden in St. Petersburg

st. Petersburg, University Embankment, 17

Description:

Rumyantsevsky Garden is located on Vasilievsky Island on the University Embankment.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century on the site of the garden was the Menshikov market, then, during the construction of the Academy of Arts, the place was used as a construction site, and at the end of the 18th century there was a parade ground of the Cadet Corps, which was located in the Menshikov Palace, which is located next door.

In 1818, the obelisk "Rumyantsev Victory" was moved from the Field of Mars to the center of the garden, in honor of which the garden, broken here in 1866 at the expense of the Siberian merchant S. F. Solovyov, was named. Among the inhabitants of the city there is an unofficial name of the garden - Solovyovskiy - in honor of its creator.

On the territory of the Rumyantsev Garden there used to be a musical pavilion and two fountains, which were dismantled in the fifties of the last century.

And since 1999, busts of graduates of the nearby Academy of Arts have been installed in the garden: I. Repin and V. Surikov.
