Field of Mars. Monument to Suvorov

p. Suvorovskaya, St. Petersburg, Russia

Description:

The Field of Mars is a beautiful square in the center of St. Petersburg, which is part of the memorial and park complex. In 1801, a bronze monument to the great Russian commander A.V. Suvorov was erected on this place.

The monument is made about the project of the famous sculptor M.I. Kozlovsky. The commander-in-chief is represented in the image of the intrepid and harsh ancient Roman God of war – Mars. Dressed in armor and a helmet, he raises a naked sword. The shield depicts the majestic coat of arms of the Russian Empire. Behind it is a three-sided altar, which depicts the Sardinian and Neapolitan crowns and tiara (headdress of the Pope), symbolizing the great victories of the Russian army under the leadership of A. V. Suvorov.

In 1819, the monument was moved from the Field of Mars to the neighboring Suvorov Square. This famous monument is a symbol of the power and invincibility of the Russian army.
