Millionth Street

Millionth Street, St. Petersburg

Description:

Millionth Street is one of the oldest streets of St. Petersburg, where the highest naval ranks headed by Peter I settled. The street runs parallel to the Neva from the Lebyazha groove to the Palace Square.

Millionth street at first withstood many different names: it was called German, and Greek, and Bolshoi, and Trinity, etc. In Soviet times, the street was named after the people’s volunteer Khalturin, who organized an explosion in the Winter Palace in 1880.

Million is the last catchy name, which is explained by the rich development of the street near the Winter Palace. It became known as Millionth House of the rich Count Sheremetev. On May 20, 1715, Peter I signed a new plan for the settlement of this part of the city.

Since 1740, trotter races were organized on the street, in which court ladies and gentlemen participated, shops and various establishments were opened. By the end of the XVIII century, there lived mainly aristocrats.
