Sea channel with alley of fountains

Russia, Leningrad region, Peterhof

Description:

One of the attractions of Peterhof is the picturesque Sea Canal with the Alley of Fountains. Its total length is 12 meters, located in the Lower Park. The author of the creative idea was Peter I. The canal was to become not only a landscape decoration, but also fulfill a more practical purpose - to connect the Grand Palace with the Gulf of Finland.

Not far from the canal is the Avenue of Fountains. 22 fountains throw their transparent jets up to a height of 4 meters. The water drains into marble bowls and then into the Sea Channel. Initially, the Alley of Fountains looked different: 22 pools were located in natural niches and were removed from the canal. In 4 bowls, on the instructions of Peter I, sculptures based on the fables of Aesop were installed. In the remaining bowls were water cannons.

In 1735, the bowls were replaced by new ones and moved closer to the Sea Canal.
