Embankment of the Griboyedov Canal
The embankment stretches from the Moika River near the Field of Mars to the Malo-Kalinkina Bridge.
Description:
The embankment on this channel is located in the segment between Fontanka and Moika.
At the moment, this embankment is included in the list of cultural heritage sites in the Russian Federation.
The length of the embankment is about 5,000 meters. The waterfront itself is very old. The exact date of construction is unknown, but references to it appear in newspapers in the mid-18th century. Later, this embankment changed its name many times.
It is known not only for its age, but also for the buildings that are on it. And including Griboyedov’s house, after which the channel was named.
Initially, the channel was named in honor of Catherine II and was called Catherine. But in 1923 it was renamed in honor of the playwright and diplomat Griboyedov, who lived in a house on the canal embankment.
Since the canal began to be built at the very beginning of the city, there are many attractions here. For example, the Church of the Savior on the Blood, the Benois building, the Kazan Cathedral, the House of the Singer company and many other buildings, each of which is an architectural monument.
