Lieutenant Schmidt's waterfront
Russia, St. Petersburg, Vasileostrovsky District
Description:
Location: between the Annunciation Bridge and the 22-23 lines of Vasilievsky Island. The most convenient way to get to the metro station "Vasileostrovsky".
The history of the embankment begins in the 18th century, at that time it was called the Embankment of the Big Neva. The modern name of the embankment received by 1918 - in honor of the leader of the uprising on the cruiser "Ochakov" Peter Schmidt. A feature of the embankment of Lieutenant Schmidt is the "step building", which repeats the concave line of the Neva coast. The central part of the panorama of the embankment of Lieutenant Schmidt is occupied by the five-domed church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Virgin.
Along the embankment there are many historical sites: the monument to I. F. Kruzenshtern, the Brakgausen mansion, the house of A. E. Shlyakov. Special attention should be paid to the twelve-column Doric portico of the Mining Institute, the Mining Museum (the museum is of world importance, its collection of natural minerals is unique).
By order of Lenin, representatives of the intelligentsia, whom the new government considered enemies, were forced to leave the country forever. In 1999, the Krasin icebreaker, installed against the 23rd line, returned to the embankment at the quay wall of the Baltic Plant. It houses a museum. The coast along Lieutenant Schmidt's embankment continues to be used for the parking of ships.
