Embankment of the Karpovka River

Description:

The embankment of the Karpovka River is one of the most ideal embankments of St. Petersburg: on the left bank it stretches from Petropavlovskaya Street to the dead end located west of Vsevolod Vishnevsky Street, and on the right side - from Dal Street to Baroque Street, and from Bolshaya Nevka to Ioannovsky Monastery.

However, this was not always the case. First, the embankment was equipped on the right bank of the Karpovka River from Bolshaya Nevka to Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt. However, in the town-planning plan of 1828, there is no mention of the embankment - the ennobled area along the river was included in the Karpovsky Lane. The independent name at the embankment of the Karpovka River appeared only a year later, in 1829.

It is noteworthy that the embankment on the left bank of the river appears a few years later, in 1836. Initially, it was located on the site from Bolshaya Nevka to Ordinary Street, much later, only on April 16, 1887, it was extended to Malaya Nevka. By 1912, they managed to bring the embankment to 36 houses, but from further work on its arrangement and extension due to the outbreak of the First World War had to be abandoned.

It is interesting that until 1913, the embankment of Karpovka on the site from Aptekarsky and almost to Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt stretched not along the coast, which was constantly flooded, but a little further away, where the street of Literators is now located.

In the 30s of the last century, the site on the left side of Karpovka, from Chapaev Street to Petropavlovskaya, was closed, however, the numbering of the houses remained unchanged: the former barracks of the Grenadier Regiment are now located on the embankment at number 2, and the Medical University is located in the building number 4. In the 60s, the right-bank sections of the embankment from the Ioannovsky Monastery to Dal Street and from Baroque to Malaya Nevka also disappeared.

The modern embankment of the Karpovka River is not much different from the old days: here you can also see the famous St. Petersburg courtyards-wells, the botanical garden, the Ioannovsky convent.
