Narva gate

p. Stracek, 2, St. Petersburg, Russia

Description:

The Narva Gate is built in the Empire style and is located on the Strikes Square in St. Petersburg. They were made in 1834 in honor of the soldiers who died in the war of 1812. The architect V. P. Stasov and a group of talented sculptors took part in the creation of this monument.

The first project was built from temporary materials: wood and cement. The triumphal arch was made in a very short time. They were built to meet the Russian victorious soldiers in 1814. This temporary monument was erected on the Narva outpost on the very border of the city. The wooden gate was built in just 1 month by the architect Quarenghi. At the very top of them was a figure composition consisting of a chariot with six horses, which was driven by the goddess of Glory.

The current monument is fully consistent with its original design. It was built from more durable materials: brick and copper. The first brick was laid in the foundation in 1827. The construction was timed to the anniversary of the battle on the Borodino field.

Today, the Narva Gate is open to visitors. You can get here by metro to Narva station. The monument is in close proximity to it.
