St. Nicholas Cathedral
Nikolskaya Square, 1/3, St. Petersburg
Description:
The St. Nicholas Cathedral is not connected with the sea and any naval victory. It became naval after the order of Catherine II to give the temple 10 images in memory of the victories won by Russian sailors over the Swedish and Turkish fleets in 1770, 1789 and 1790.
The blue building with white stucco is built in the form of an equilateral cross and decorated with 68 columns of the Corinthian order. The temple is divided into lower and upper churches, consecrated in the name of the Epiphany of the Lord and in the name of Nicholas the Miracle Worker. Hence the name of the church is the St. Nicholas Cathedral.
The temple was never closed, although it was destroyed in the twenties. In its walls there are boards with the names of sailors who died on the battleship Petropavlovsk, on the submarine Komsomolets, etc.
