Okhta powder factory

Russia, St. Petersburg, Krasina str., 397

Description:

Okhtinsky Powder Factory is an enterprise that arose under Peter I during the war with Sweden. Re-qualified into a chemical company is the oldest operating plant in St. Petersburg.

The plant originates with several powder mills, built in 1715 by order of Peter I on the banks of the river Okhta and flowing into it Luppa. Soon a whole enterprise was rebuilt, providing the Russian army with gunpowder, and a century later, a bridge-dam was built according to the project of the talented engineer Bazin, which made the Okhtinsky plant the most progressive in its industry.

Due to the specifics of production, the plant was completely rebuilt several times. From the production of gunpowder, the enterprise moved to the production of ammunition, and in 1922 began to produce chemical products due to the fact that Europe stopped supplying these products to the new socialist state. The eastern outskirts of St. Petersburg, where the plant is located, was called "Powder", the enterprise is also called today the Okhta Chemical Plant.
