Description:

The “Tsar Carpenter” is a monument to Peter I, erected in 1910 in St. Petersburg, and a copy of this sculpture was installed a year later in Holland. Worked on the project of the monument sculptor Leopold Bernstam. The opening of the monument was timed to the 300th anniversary of the Grand Embassy of Peter I and the 300th anniversary of the founding of the fleet in Russia.

In his youth, Peter the Great studied the skill of shipbuilding in the Dutch city of Zaandam. It was this moment in the life of the king and captured the author of the sculpture.

In 1918, most of the monuments to Peter I were removed under the pretext of “insignificant artistic value”, and the “Tsar-Carpenter” is no exception: “It was a monument-a trinket, in its nature rather a table figurine than a monument.” Now the monument is erected on the Admiralty embankment of St. Petersburg.
