Monument to Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky

St. Petersburg, Baltic Metro, Admiralty District

Description:

The monument to K.E. Tsiolkovsky is one of the most magnificent monuments in St. Petersburg.

The monument, which became a gift for the 300th anniversary of the city, was made by order of the General Director of NPK Technologist Soso Davidovich Kutalia. The authors are sculptor Livon Beibutyan and architects Olga Glazova and Igor Zabolotsky.

Initially, the idea was to depict the scientist in his favorite chair, but then decided to make the monument more abstract. For the monument was brought from Vyborg granite array 3.5 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. The work took about two years, and on September 16, 2005 the monument was inaugurated.

The monument is a torso of Tsiolkovsky, passing into a granite array. The scientist's gaze is turned to the sky. Around is a playground with astronomical themes. The opening was attended by the great-granddaughter of the scientist – Elena Tymoshenkova, on whom this event made the most favorable impression.
