Monument to the destroyer "Watching"
prosp. Kronverksky, 27, St. Petersburg, Russia
Description:
The monument to the destroyer "Guardian" is one of the few pre-revolutionary monuments. It is located in St. Petersburg in Alexander Park. The date of its construction and opening is considered to be May 10, 1911.
In 1904, during the Russian-Japanese battle, the destroyer "Guardian" entered into an unequal battle with the enemy. The crew had no chances, but the guns did not subside until the last minute of the ship on the water. The Japanese decided to capture the “Guardian” as a trophy along with the entire team. Russian sailors decided to be buried under the water column, rather than become prisoners of the enemy.
The memory of the brave sailors was immortalized by the decision of Nicholas II. In the middle of the 20th century, the monument was restored and a memorial plaque with the names of the destroyer crew was restored.
Anyone can visit the memorial place. You can get by metro, to the station Gorky, as well as by bus or taxi on Kamennoostrovsky Avenue.
