The First Winter Palace of Peter I – Hermitage Theatre
Description:
Not many people know that the Winter Palace, which is well known to residents and guests of the city, is the sixth in a row. A feature of the very first Winter Palace was a pronounced asceticism of the design. The building itself was a fairly small two-storey building in total area, which was covered with a fairly high roof with tiles.
According to surviving historical documents, the First Winter Palace of Peter I had a rather modest decoration, represented by pilasters on the corners, as well as rectangular window casings and a central portal with adjacent low service wings. The halls of the modern museum are located inside the Hermitage Theatre, built directly on the site of the palace of the first Russian emperor (St. Petersburg, Palace Embankment, 32).
