River Monastyrka

Description:

Monasty'rka is a river in St. Petersburg, between the Obvodny Canal and the Neva.

Originally, the Monastery, like the Volkovka River, was part of the Black River. Mention of this river is available in the annals of 1500. When the eastern section of the Obvodny Canal was built in 1829, it divided the river into two parts. The northern part became known as the Monastery according to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, and the direction of the river flow changed to the opposite: it began to flow from the Neva and flow into the Obvodny Canal. The first bridge over the Black River (now the Monastyrka River) appeared in 1712 along the axis of the present Nevsky Prospect. Now on this place is the 1st Lavra Bridge.

Modern length 1.15 km, width 30 m, depth 3-5 m.
