Description:
SPb ITMO is one of the world leaders in training specialists in the field of advanced information and optical technologies
The University is one of the oldest educational institutions in Russia. Training of specialists began in 1900, when a mechanical-optical and watch department was created in the Crafts School of Tsarevich Nikolai. On the basis of this department, the Technicum of Precision Mechanics and Optics was established in 1920, and later the Leningrad Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics (LITMO) in 1930. The Institute developed as a technical university with the training of engineers in a wide range of specialties. In 1980, LITMO was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for merits in training highly qualified personnel for the national economy of the country and the development of scientific research. In 1994, the Institute was awarded the status of a University following the state certification. The status of the University was confirmed by the State accreditation of the University in 1998, 2003 and 2008.
