Sculpture "Dnepr" at the base of the Rostral column
Exchange Square, 4, St. Petersburg, 199034
Description:
Rostral columns are rightfully considered a symbol of Vasilievsky Island. They are decorated with bows of ships, and at the foot - four majestic figures as symbols of great rivers. One of them is the Dnieper at the northern column. Sculptures were built in the early 19th century by the design of Camberlain and Thibaut. Russian sculptors demanded too high prices, so the French, who worked in the city at that time, came to the rescue. The statues are made of limestone as it is easy to process. Designed in a complex with the Exchange Square. In the early 20th century, they were restored, but not properly. And only in the late 1990s they were returned to their original appearance. There are columns on the Exchange Square. You can get by metro to the station "Gostiny Dvor" or "Nevsky Prospekt" and then go along Nevsky Prospekt in the direction of the Admiralty.
