Saint Petersburg

The tar promenade

Description:

The resin embankment stretches from Smolny Prospekt to the embankment of Robespierre. It got its name in 1887 on the nearby Smolny Cathedral. For a long time this embankment remained unsettled. Only in 1997, the construction of a high-speed highway began here. In 2000, its first phase was put into operation. The embankment was expanded, the granite wall was pushed to the Neva for 10-25 m. Also, engineering networks were shifted here, a carriageway with a dividing lane was arranged, 110 outdoor lighting supports were installed, granite descents to the water were built. Instead of the former brick project of architects V.V. Popov and Y.G. Shindin, a new highly artistic metal fence of the Smolny Garden with a total length of 404 m was installed on the stone plinth. At the end of 2001, the movement was open throughout the embankment.

Currently, it is planned to build a tunnel under the Neva, which will connect the Smolnaya embankment with Piskarevsky Prospekt.
