Middle Podjac street

Russia, St. Petersburg, Middle Podiac Street

Description:

Middle Podyacheskaya Street is located in the Admiralty in St. Petersburg, it originates from the embankment of the Griboyedov Canal and extends to the intersection of the same embankment with Rimsky-Korsakov Avenue. The street appeared in the city in the early XVIII century. Initially, it was given the name Prikaznaya Admiraltyskaya Street, thirty years later it was renamed the Second Podyachiy Street, this name was chosen, since in this area lived mainly people of the lower class, including podyaks. Nearby there was Small Podyacheskaya Street, then in 1821 the street acquired its name, which has survived to this day.

The main attractions of the street are Kharlamov Bridge and the building of the First Public Assembly, which is a federal architectural monument. In the house No. 15 there is the “House of the old woman-promoter”, where Alyona Ivanovna lived, the heroine of Dostoevsky’s novel “Crime and Punishment”, killed by Raskolnikov.
