Old Ladoga Nikolsky Monastery

Leningrad region, Volkhov district, Staraya Lodoga village

Description:

The Old Ladoga Nikolsky Monastery is an active Orthodox male monastery, which is located on the picturesque bank of the Volkhov River in the southern part of the village of Staraya Lodoga, Leningrad region. It was founded around 1241 by Alexander Nevsky in gratitude to God for the victory over the Swedes during the Battle of the Neva. The monastery is one of the oldest in Old Ladoga. Subsequently, the holy monastery was rebuilt twice: in 1628 and in 1811.

The Soviet authorities closed the Old Ladoga Nikolsky Monastery in 1927, although the monks were able to survive as a community for another ten years under the cover of a fishing artel. In 2002, the religious complex was returned to the Orthodox Church for the revival of monastic life within its walls.
