Suvorov Avenue

Suvorovsky Prospect, Central District, St. Petersburg

Description:

Suvorov Avenue in the cultural capital of Russia appeared in the XVIII century. It began from the building of the menagerie, which now houses the cinema "October", and was called Elephant street or avenue. At the end of the XIX century, the prospectus was extended and renamed Suvorovsky. At the same time, the building of the General Staff Academy was built on the street, which was given the house No. 32. It opened the museum of the great commander A.V. Suvorov, in whose honor the street was named.

In Soviet times, the renaming of streets affected all cities, and St. Petersburg is no exception. The name of Suvorov Prospekt was not pleasing to the Bolsheviks. So, from the 20s to the 40s, the prospectus was Soviet. Then the name Suvorovsky was returned to him again.

As for the sights, there are a lot of them on the avenue. Basically, these are buildings of the late XIX century and the beginning of the XX century. As a rule, these are private houses of wealthy merchants, military hospitals, apartment houses built according to the plan of famous architects. Such as M.K. Benoit, V.E. Morgan and many others.
