Trubetskoy Bastion Prison
Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Petersburg, Russia
Description:
The prison of the Trubetsk Bastion is located in the Peter and Paul Fortress, it functioned from 1872 to 1921 and served mainly for the detention of political prisoners. Its construction continued from 1870 to 1872 under the project of M. A. Pasypkin and K. P. Andreev. On the site of the dismantled walls of the Trubetskoy bastion, a two-storey pentagonal building with an inner courtyard and an observation tower was erected. The original plan was to have 73 solitary cells, but in 1878 a minor renovation was made, resulting in 69. A very strict system of solitary confinement was introduced in this prison to isolate political prisoners from each other.
In February 1879 there was a riot of prisoners who demanded a better regime and free release of tobacco. He was put down, but the prisoners went on hunger strike, and after a while their demands were partially fulfilled. In 1924, a museum was made from this prison, the last who were imprisoned there were members of the Kronstadt rebellion. In 2010, mass graves of Red Terror victims were discovered here.
