Professor Popov Street
Description:
Professor Popov Street is located in the Petrogradsky district of St. Petersburg, on the Pharmacy Island. It runs from the Sand to the Pharmacy embankment. For a long time, this part of the city was called Sand Avenue, which was later renamed Sand Street Electrotechnu. Professor Popov Street got its independent name thanks to the building of the Institute in which Popov lived and worked.
In addition to the Institute on the street there is another interesting building No. 10. This is the mansion of V.O. Mikhnevich or the house of Matyushin. It was built in the middle of the 19th century for the merchant Balashov, who later bought for himself journalist V.O. Mikhnevich. The mansion was rebuilt, but the exterior facade was preserved in its original form. After his death, Mikhnevich bequeathed the building to the Literary Foundation and in the 10-20s it became the headquarters for Russian futurists. Malevich and Filonov often visited here, Mayakovsky and Khlebnikov lived and worked for some time. In 1944, it was decided to turn the mansion into the Museum of St. Petersburg avant-garde. Today it is a branch of the Museum of History of St. Petersburg.
