Saint Petersburg

University promenade

Vasilievsky Island, University Embankment, St. Petersburg

Description:

The embankment was named University because of St. Petersburg State University, which is located on it. It stretches from Exchange Square to Trezzini Square.

In the XVIII century, the embankment was called the Cash Line, as it was the front street. Later, its names were known as the Embankment Line, the Great Embankment, the Cadet Embankment, etc. There was a time when the beach had no name at all.

The development of the embankment was carried out actively: according to the plans of Peter I, the palaces of Menshikov and Praskovya Fedorovna, the buildings of the Kunstkamera and the Twelve Collegias, and other buildings were built here. The waterfront was expanded and rebuilt.

This is the most beautiful embankment of St. Petersburg. It offers beautiful views of the Admiralty and English Embankments, Decembrists Square, St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the Senate and Synod building.
