Manor of M. Vorontsov
ooh Garden, 26, St. Petersburg
Description:
The estate of M. Vorontsov was built in the XVIII century according to the project of B. Rastrelli. A little later, an Orthodox church and a Catholic chapel of the Order of the Knights of Malta were built in the palace. D. Quarenghi worked on these projects.
The splendor and richness of the interiors inside the palace have not survived to this day. In the decoration, much attention was paid to details. The best of Italy was brought here.
The first owners of the estate were secretaries of Peter I and Prince Menshikov A. Makarov and A. Volkov. Later, Vice-Chancellor M. Vorontsov settled in their place, whose residence here gave the house the second name - the Chancellor's House. With the advent of the new government, he could no longer maintain the palace, so he was forced to sell the estate to the treasury for 217,600 rubles.
The palace was used as a guest house. Later Peter I made the estate the Castle of the Knights of Malta. Since 1955, the Suvorov Military School has been located in the palace.
