Hermitage Gate
Description:
The exquisite gate of the Winter Palace evokes admiring glances from afar and a desire to come closer. In the 18th century wooden gates were installed, invented by the architect J. M. Felten. When they burned down in 1837, they put wooden ones again, although even then they offered to make metal ones.
The project of N. A. Gornostaev, a familiar image for us, was approved in 1855. The front gate was made in St. Petersburg from wrought iron, decorated with details of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Massive and at the same time elegant designs included gilded imperial monograms. At the top of the gate, two-headed eagles with symbols of state power were installed.
Of course, the 1917 revolution did not spare them. By 2003, the gate was completely rebuilt. Go out to the station "Gostiny Dvor" and enjoy a walk to the Palace Square.
