Green Bridge

moika River, Central District, St. Petersburg

Description:

Green or Police Bridge connects Kazan and the 2nd Admiralty Islands, passing through the Moika River in the Central District of St. Petersburg along Nevsky Prospect. The nearest metro station is Admiralty. Where did the name of the bridge come from? In the 1730s, it was painted green. And in 1768 the bridge became known as “Police”, because the city police department was located nearby. After the October Revolution, the bridge was named “People’s Bridge” and remained so until 1998.

After the appearance of Nevsky Prospekt, there was a need for a new bridge, which later became the city border until 1726. Here they collected travel taxes in the Mytny yard, near the Gostiny Dvor. The bridge was reconstructed and repaired repeatedly, painted green and renamed. The modern three-span Green Bridge is tripled on the beam system, has stone supports and wooden spans.
