Chesme column Tsarskoye village

Description:

The news of the victory at Chesme reached St. Petersburg, Catherine II commissioned the architect Rinaldi to create a column like a rostral pillar erected in Rome in honor of the victory of Consul Guy Duilia over the fleet of Carthage.

The column (Doric order) was built and installed at a height of about 25 m in 1771-1778 by the architect Antony #Rinaldi. During this time, the outlines of the coastline of the Great Pond were changed to give them an abreath of the Aegean Sea. (!)

#The column is made of Olonets marble and granite. The granite pedestal rising from the water is made in the form of a truncated pyramid. In the center of its eastern side is a semicircular arch, taken by a grille, behind which in the body of the stylobate is a stone staircase leading to the pedestal of the column.

The marble trunk has rosters. Rostre is the bow of the ship. Since ancient times, the Romans had a tradition of decorating their monuments after another victory - with rostras (noses) of enemy ships.
