Passage
Description:
Passage from the French. The word "passer" means to pass, to wander.
The fashion for "passages" came from Western Europe, where a new type of shopping buildings appeared - in the form of a covered street with shops overlooking it.
The building of the most famous passage in St. Petersburg was built in 1846-1848 in the quarter between Nevsky Pr and Italian St. Architect R. A. Zhelyazevich. The length of the Passage is about 180 m, illuminated by upper daylight through glass lanterns arranged in a truss coating.
This was the first example of such a long light covering in St. Petersburg. Shops were placed on the sides of the “passage street” in two floors. The third floor was adapted for apartments.
In the basement, products were sold that required low temperatures and a short shelf life.
