Monument to E. Pugachev

Russia, 430009, Republic of Mordovia, Saransk, fork in Volgogradskaya and Korolenko streets

Description:

The only monument to E. Pugachev in Russia is located in Saransk. It is installed at the intersection of Volgogradskaya and Korolenko streets.

In 1774, on the banks of Insar, the city nobility met Pugachev’s army with bread and salt. During his stay in Saransk, Pugachev did a lot for the city: he issued a manifesto granting freedom to the serfs, held an amnesty, divided grain and salt among the poorest strata of the population. By his order, many wealthy merchants and officials were executed.

At the place where the Pugachev troops used to pass, a monument is now erected that commemorates this event. The monumental structure was erected in the form of a wall-fortress with cast-iron guns and a large block of granite. Yemelyan Pugachev himself is depicted in full growth, with weapons behind his belt and hands folded behind his back.
