Saratov

Road bridge across the Volga

Russia connects Saratov and Engels.

Description:

Saratov automobile bridge performs a very important function - connects the right bank of the river, on which Saratov is located, and the left bank of Engels. The grand opening of the bridge took place in 1965, and at that time, the bridge was recognized as the longest in Europe (length was 2803.7 meters), but the width of the carriageway is 12 meters.

The main components of the bridge are a riverbed bridge with a length of 2.5 km, dams and several bridges passing through the tributaries of the Volga. For the construction of the bridge, reinforced concrete was used at full speed, it is impossible to even imagine how much it was needed. A bridge was assembled from huge two-ribbed reinforced concrete beams. On the roadway there are temperature seams, which are covered with steel plates.

The part of the road on which traffic occurs is fenced with a curb, whose height is half a meter. Thanks to the curb, vehicles involved in an accident remain on the bridge, rather than “bathing” in the Volga. Such an emergency happened only with the Ural fire engine and the Kirovets tractor, which have wheels of large diameter.

Komsomol members took part in the construction of the automobile bridge, the feature film “Bridge is being built” is dedicated to this event.
