German street
Description:
The construction of the street was first discussed in 1803. Then the project of development of the city raised the question of creating a prospectus between residential buildings. Mostly Germans settled in this area. Hence the name of the street, which lasted until 1917.
In 1883, the city authorities made an attempt to rename the German in Skobelev. In honor of the local general. Officials sent an application for a name change to St. Petersburg. While waiting for the answer, the townspeople trumpeted the whole city about the new name. There were even signs on the street, but a refusal came from the northern capital.
After the February Revolution in 1917, German Street was renamed Republic Street. But in 1935, Saratov had to get used to the new name - Kirov Avenue.
Today, the Saratov Arbat is mainly populated by expensive shops, cafes, restaurants, cinemas.
