Monument to Chernyshevsky work by A. P. Kibalnikov
chernyshevsky Square, Volga District, Saratov City
Description:
Once on the site of the monument to Chernyshevsky stood a bust of Alexander II. Then the square was called not Chernyshevsky, but Novosoborna. In 1917, the authorities decided to demolish it and put a monument in honor of the Saratov revolutionary. The author of the project was the sculptor P.F. Dunduk. The monument was a bust of Chernyshevsky on the shoulders, made of plaster or concrete. The design was painted black, which shimmered in the sun. But the monument was short-lived, and in 1937 the authorities announced a competition for a new monument to N. G. Chernyshevsky.
The next monument in honor of the famous politician appeared in Saratov in 1953. The author of the current monument was A. Kibalnikov. He made a figure of Chernyshevsky at full height. Before installation, it was specifically sent for approval to J. V. Stalin. The chairman of the CPSU did not like the long hair of the revolutionary. He asked them to remove them. And then, bronze Chernyshevsky shortened haircut.
