Sebezh Museum of Local Lore

About the company:

Learn as much information as possible about the corner of the planet in which you rest, you can go to the museum, telling about the history of this region. As a rule, such an institution exists in every city. It meticulously collected with good hands all the memories and historical evidence of the life of the city, its people, buildings, events. There is such a museum in Sebezhsk. It is located in a room used as a prison during the Soviet Union. It may sound ominous, but this nuance gives a special zest to the cultural event.

The museum was founded in 1927. During the Second World War, the collection of the museum was badly damaged, it was simply looted. But already in 1947, the property of Sebezhsk was gradually restored. This is the only place in the Pskov region where the natural science collection has been preserved. In addition, unique archaeological finds are collected here, there is a collection of paintings by the artist Gromov K.M., the former director of the museum.

The very first exhibits were brought to the museum by local teachers, who united in an initiative group and decided to create their own local history museum. That was in 1926. The collection began with materials on the nature of the region and its history. By the opening of the museum, the collection had already 286 exhibits, and in August of the same year the Sebezh Museum was included in the museum network through public education. The entire building of the museum then occupied only 58 square meters. Now one of the central exhibits of the museum are the archives of the fourth and fifth Kalinin partisan brigades that operated in the Sebezhsky district during the Great Patriotic War.

In 1979, the Sebezhsky Museum of Local Lore became part of the association of museums of the Pskov region. Over the years, the museum grew, its collections were replenished and already ceased to fit in the size of a small apartment. In the late 50s, the museum moved to the former prison. Today it occupies 16 halls in two buildings with a total area of 893 sq.m. and the collection of objects collected in it has already exceeded 12 thousand.
All expositions are presented in chronological order, so it will be easy for the visitor to study the history of Sebezhsk, passing through all the halls.

The museum is open daily from ten in the morning to six in the evening, except Monday and the last Friday of each month.
