Nicola White Cathedral

ooh Kaluga, 26/12, Serpukhov, Moscow region

Description:

St. Nicholas Bely Cathedral, or St. Nicholas Cathedral, is an Orthodox church built in the historic center of the city. The cathedral is a vivid example of the Moscow Empire.

Initially, a wooden temple was built on the site of the current cathedral, which is mentioned in the Serpukhov inventory of 1552 and 1620. In the XVII century, a stone church was built here. It is assumed that Yaroslavl masters worked on the new temple. In 1721, a new stone temple of limestone was built: the building was born from a four-piece with an altar extension. The last reconstruction of the temple took place in 1857.

In Soviet times, the temple was closed, the bell tower was partially destroyed. At this time, a pasta factory was located in the temple.

In 1995, the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, and 10 years later it was restored, creating two new chapels in honor of the New Martyrs of Serpukhov and Our Lady “Help to Rhodes”.
