The Assumption Church

ooh Volodarsky, 5, Serpukhov, Moscow region

Description:

The Assumption Church in Serpukhov, located in the historical center of the city, together with the Trinity Church and the Temple of Ilya the Prophet, forms an ensemble of temples that emphasize the beauty of the cityscape.

The temple was built in pseudo-Russian style. It has three aisles: the icons of “Joy of All Who Sorrow”, St. Nicholas Sviatosha and the Apostle John the Theologian.

Initially, a wooden temple was built on the site of the present temple, which was later replaced by a stone one. The church was repeatedly subjected to fires, after which it was repeatedly restored.

In Soviet times, the temple was closed, and the rector of the temple Alexy Sinai was shot at the Butovo polygon. The Church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1990s. At present, services in the temple are irregular.
