Serpukhov

Introductory Monastery

Serpukhov, Russia

Description:

Serpukhov Monastery was built in 1360 on the outskirts of the city near the Nara River by Moscow Metropolitan St. Alexis. After some time, a stone temple was built here, which has not survived to our time. The earliest of the monastery buildings date from the XVI – XVII century. Quite intensive construction was carried out here since 1598.

In 1599, the architects erected a new Vvedensky Cathedral, and a year later they created a rather complex refectory complex, in the center of which was a beautiful tent church, founded in honor of the Holy Great Martyr George. Its construction was carried out exclusively at the expense of Boris Godunov. In 1600, the church of St. Theodore of Ankira was built in the monastery, after which the work was temporarily suspended.

In the middle of the XVII century around the monastery were raised stone massive walls with towers. Soon some restoration work was carried out. From the temple of the Introduction to the temple of the Most Holy Theotokos was rebuilt and a chapel was made in the name of St. Tsarevich Dimitri. At the beginning of the next century, construction was completely stopped due to lack of funds. Over the next two centuries, the monastery led a rather poor economic life.
