Severomorsk

The history of Severomorsk is original and original. Its formation and development are inextricably linked with the development of the Northern Fleet. The city of Severomorsk grew on the site of the former Waeng camp, founded in 1896-1897. The indigenous inhabitants of the Kola Peninsula are the Sami. They were among the first to come here and find a small mountain stream full of fish. The name of the river comes from the Sami word "vaaj" - important, which means "deer queen".

At the beginning of the XX century in our places lived except the Sami and Pomors, Finns and Russians. During the October events of 1917, the Finns mostly left. According to the regional museum of local lore in 1917 in Vaenga lived only 13 people. And only in the 20s began active development of the territory. According to the census of 1926, 31 people lived in the village together with loggers. In 1934-1935, surveyors arrived to lay the Vaenga-Murmansk road. The construction of the road was completed in 1940-1941. A new phase in Vaenga’s history begins with the creation of the Northern Fleet. In 1935, construction of the naval base in Vaenga began. In 1937, the Northern Flotilla was renamed the Northern Fleet. The naval forces were replenished with naval aviation.

In the pre-war years Vaenga became a solid construction site. The builders lived in tent cities. On the eve of the Great Patriotic War, Vaenga turned from a Sami camp into a settlement that plays a great strategic importance both for the Soviet Arctic and for the whole country. During the war, Vaenga was considered more a military garrison than a village.

During the Great Patriotic War, the North Seamen showed steadfastness and courage in defending the Soviet Arctic. In the village of Vaenga and nearby territories, the aviation of the Northern Fleet was based.

After the war, the Northern Fleet improved its combat readiness in peacetime, and the villagers began peaceful labor. In the village were built multi-storey buildings, schools, a hospital, a library.

On April 18, 1951, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, the working village of Vaenga was transformed into a city of regional subordination - the city of Severomorsk.

In the 60s, the sphere of household services is developing in the young city. In the following years, sausage and dairy plants, a bakery begin to work. The city of Severomorsk becomes not only a city - a warrior, but also a city - a worker. By the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of November 26, 1996 No. 1606, the city of Severomorsk, with the adjacent settlements Roslyakovo, Safonov, Safonov-1, Severomorsk-3, Shchukozero was transformed into a closed administrative-territorial formation with a total area of 32.3 km2 and a border length of 130.5 km, of which 28.8 km passes through the tidal zone of the Kola Bay and 101.7 km through the land territory.

Today, about 100 thousand residents live in the territory subordinated to the administration of Severomorsk, of which 49% are men, 51% are women.

Over 777 enterprises of various forms of ownership are registered in ZATO Severomorsk, there is a local food industry, construction and ship repair enterprises, organizations, mainly under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense, well-developed infrastructure.

The trade sector has expanded significantly recently. The retail chain is represented by 300 stores. In addition, with the development of private business, about 5,000 people started their own business. In the budgetary sectors of the national economy, some institutions are municipal, i.e. they are financed by the city, the local budget, and the other part - departmental, i.e. the cost of their maintenance is borne by the Ministry of Defense, the budget of Russia.

There are 10 historical and cultural monuments in the city, 24 of them in the district. All of them are under state registration and protection. In addition, there are archaeological monuments in our area, there are 6 of them in total. Among them: stone labyrinth "Babylon" - II century BC; Oleneostrovsky burial ground - V century BC; settlement of the Neolithic era. For forty-seven years in the city built a large housing stock, paved streets. Local raw materials are used for construction, a non-metallic mineral combine works.

Currently, the city has 17 schools, more than 20 preschool institutions. Children study at a music school, attend art, sports schools, a station of young technicians. The house of creativity of children and youth. The network of health care institutions includes 14 medical and preventive institutions. There are 21 cultural institutions. 27 monuments of history and culture have been established in the territory of ZATO. All of them are under state registration and protection. In addition, there are archaeological monuments in our area, there are only six of them.

But the most important wealth of our city is people. They built a city among the hills, they serve on the edge of the earth, defending the Fatherland. More than 8,000 North Marines have been awarded for their valiant work, 12 of them honorary citizens.
