The Savior-Preobrazhensky Avramiyev Monastery, or abbreviated Avramiyev Monastery, is one of the main shrines of Smolensk and one of its oldest monasteries. The monastery was founded at the beginning of the XIII century on a place located outside the rampart. First, the church of St. Ignatius the God-bearer was built, then another temple appeared - in honor of the position of the robes and the belt of the Virgin. Soon after the appearance of the first monastic temples, cells appeared next to them. Thus the monastery was formed, which gained fame after the Monk Abraham, a preacher and ascetic, came here.

The monastery was not rich and was dependent on the bishop of Smolensk. Therefore, active construction was not carried out here, and the buildings were few. But the righteous life and spiritual exploits of the Monk Abraham earned the monastery honor and confirmed the existence of the monastery. Despite many historical events, including wars, coups d’etats, and much more, it has survived and survived to this day.

Difficult times for the monastery began in 1611, when it fell into desolation, and until 1658, the Catholic monastery of the Dominican Order was located in the premises of the monastery. Monastic life was resumed only in 1658 - by order of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, a wooden church was restored. Then, in 1728, a seminary was opened at the monastery, and two centuries later the Abraham Brotherhood was formed, which was engaged in educational activities until 1917. Having survived the revolution, abolition and destruction, the monastery was revived in 2002.
