The Church of Michael the Archangel is a stone tower-shaped temple erected in Smolensk in the XII century in honor of Archangel Michael. Until the closure in the first half of the XX century, the church housed the white-stone tomb of Smolensk Prince David, the founder of the temple. For some time there was a monastery in the church.

The last large-scale restoration of the church took place in 1963. Restorers removed some architectural details of the XIX century and restored the architectural forms of the XII century (narrow high windows of the temple, drum windows, kiot above the southern portal).
Today, the church is not only one of the attractions of the city, but also used for its intended purpose, it is a functioning temple.
