Monument to Fedor Konyu

Anyone who is even a little interested in the history of Russia and, in particular, the history of Smolensk, must be familiar with the name of Fyodor Kony. This man entered the history of the city as the creator of one of the main attractions of Smolensk - the fortress wall. The monument to Fedor Konyu appeared on the city map in 1991 and, as you would expect, is located next to the Thunder Tower - the first of the restored. The authors of the monument were sculptor O.N. Komov and architect A.K. Anipko.

Who was Fedor Savelyevich Horse? Living in the second half of the XVI century, the Russian architect became famous not only for the construction of urban fortifications of Smolensk, which lasted from 1596 to 1602. He also designed stone walls and towers of the Moscow White City, erected in 1585-1593 and, unfortunately, demolished in the XVIII century. And this is far from a complete list. For Smolensk, the construction of the Fortress Wall was of great importance, solving many problems for the defenders of the city. From the high walls it was possible to notice the approach of the enemy from afar and have time to prepare for defense, and powerful walls and inconspicuous loopholes left the enemy almost no chance.

The monument to Fedor Konyu is located in the heart of the city, near the entrance to the park on Lenin Square. The sculptor depicted the architect at the moment of reflection, with a design tool in his hand, as if thinking about how to make his creation even more durable and reliable.
