Description:
The monument to the defenders of Smolensk in 1812 is located on the main alley of the city park of culture and recreation, also known as the Lopatinsky Garden. The grand opening of the monument, designed by architect Antonio Adamini, took place on November 5, 1841.
On the base of the monument depicts the plan of the Smolensk battle, and also carved memorial inscriptions telling about it. On one side of the monument is a list from the icon of the Smolensk Mother of God Odigitria. This is a copy made in 1818 on the initiative of the commander of the artillery company. This unit was responsible for the protection of the miraculous image, which was in the Russian army during the Battle of Borodino.
The monument was cast from cast iron in St. Petersburg and weighs about 30 tons. The height of the monument is about 26 meters. An interesting story related to the installation of the monument. In 1856, during the work on laying the foundation of the future building of the male gymnasium, two French cannons were found by diggers. In 1873, these guns were installed on both sides of the monument on specially cast carriages.
