Holy Trinity Monastery

Description:
The Smolensk Holy Trinity Monastery is located in the historical center of the city, south of the Cathedral Mountain. Historians find it difficult to name the exact date of the foundation of the monastery, and this is due to the stormy cycle of the history of the city, when the monasteries replaced each other, were built and rebuilt. Being one of the most ancient Russian cities, Smolensk became the subject of disputes and wars between the Lithuanian and Moscow princes and was raided by the Mongol Tatars. One of the written evidence of the existence of the monastery is the charter of Alexander, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, dated 1506.
After the end of the Polish intervention, in 1669 the Holy Trinity Monastery was again consecrated as an Orthodox monastery, and until 1740 it served as the residence of the Smolensk bishops. A few years later, in 1672, the construction of the main monastery temple in stone began. Before that, the Trinity Cathedral was wooden. The construction was initiated by the metropolitan. Construction was carried out by the Moscow architects.
After the revolution, the monastery, like many other monasteries, was abolished. And in 1930, the bells were removed from his bell tower, which were sent for remelting in broken form. Such a sad point was put on the history of the Trinity Monastery in the twentieth century. Only in 2009, some of the surviving buildings were transferred to the Holy Trinity convent revived several years earlier.
