Tikhvin church
Smolensk region, Yelny district, village of Novospasskoye
Description:
The Tikhvin Church in the village of Novopasskoye, Smolensk region was built in 1786. The Church had two chapels: one in the name of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the second in the name of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God.
During the Patriotic War of 1812, priest John Stabrowski together with the peasants defended the church from ruin by French marauders. After the revolution of 1917, the Transfiguration Church was not closed, but gradually fell into disrepair, and in the 60s it was closed.
In 1990 it was transferred to the Smolensk diocese and restored. On July 9, 1999, on the day of memory of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, it was rediscovered and consecrated by Metropolitan Kirill.
Today it is a small concise structure. The outer walls of the church are white, and the domes and roofs of the chapels are blue. One of the decorations of the church and the dominant architectural element is the chapel.
