The Griboyedov Manor "Hmelite"

khmelita settlement, Smolensk region, Russian Federation

Description:

The memorial museum-estate "Hmelita", located in the village of the same name in the Vyazem district of the Smolensk region, was opened in 1990. The museum is located on the territory of 24,635 hectares and includes a whole complex of architectural, historical and natural monuments associated with the names of such outstanding figures in the history of Russia as A.S. Griboyedov, P.S. Nakhimov, S.S. Uvarov and M.A. Bulgakov.

The central attraction of the reserve is the Khmelita estate - this is the family estate of the Griboyedov family, since the end of the XVII century. The childhood and youth of the future writer are closely connected with this place - every summer the young Griboyedov spent in the house of his uncle. Beautiful picturesque hops played an important role in the formation of the personality of the writer. Years later, many youthful impressions and peculiarities of life and life of the Smolensk nobility were reflected in the work of Griboyedov. In 1995, in the year of the 200th anniversary of the great writer, the Museum of A.S. Griboyedov was opened here, which is located in the basement of the palace.

Unfortunately, the once magnificent palace and park ensemble of the middle of the XVIII century, built in the style of Elizabethan Baroque, in its original form has not survived to this day. However, since 1968, a unique monument has been restored according to the project of architect V.E. Kulakov. As for the museum, its exposition presents the writer’s desktop, numerous portraits, handwritten copies of “Woe from Wit”, paintings and many items related to the writer’s life. Every year the All-Russian Griboyedov holiday is held in Khmelite.
