About the company:
The house-museum is a monument of history and culture of federal significance (Decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR No. 624 of 04.12.1974). Included in the List of objects of historical and cultural heritage of federal (all-Russian) significance (Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 176 of February 20, 1995).
Initially, the house, built in 1933, was located in the village of Klushino. In 1945, the Gagarin family moved to Gzhatsk, and in 1947, Gagarin’s father, Alexei Ivanovich Gagarin, moved him to the city and installed him on Leningradskaya Street (now Gagarin Street). The Gagarin situation remained unchanged in the house until the late 1970s. Here passed the school years of the future astronaut.
In 1969, it was decided to place a museum in the house in order to perpetuate the memory of the first cosmonaut of the planet and popularize the achievements of cosmonautics. On April 5, 1970, the grand opening of the Yuri Gagarin Memorial Museum took place.
At present, the atmosphere of 1949 – the time of Yuri Gagarin’s departure from his home – has been recreated here. The exhibits introduce the way of a simple hardworking Smolensk family, with family traditions that played a great role in the formation of the character of the future conqueror of space.
In the courtyard there is a monument to Anna Timofeevna Gagarina, the mother of the first cosmonaut (2001).
