The house of Budnikov merchant

In our city - the hero of Smolensk we can see the most unusual houses and visit the most mysterious places in the city. Like the house I'm going to tell you about. This is the only house in the whole territory of Smolensk and Russia, at the moment, which is decorated with tiles. This is the real jewel of our city.

Every year hundreds of tourists come to see the tiled house of the merchant Budnikov, from different parts of Russia and the world. Interestingly, the house was built Budnikov not for himself. The building was originally intended for the Officers' Assembly of our city. The first red brick of the future house was laid in 1895. Its construction lasted only a year and was completed in the same year, 1895.

On the walls of the house you can see numerous mosaics of various forms. At the very corner of the house, the coat of arms of our city at that time is clearly visible. It should be noted that the house itself is very interesting from the point of view of architectural history. The preserved tiled decor of the Smolensk Budnikov House is of great artistic interest as a monument of decorative and applied art. In the external decoration of the building, irrigated multicolor tiles of different sizes and shapes are widely used. The decor is stylized ancient Russian forms: poredrik, broads, kokoshniks, set semicolonies with cube-shaped capitals, balusters, tiles.

Once the Budnikov house was a real pioneer center, it was in it that the House of Pioneers was located. Over time, it became a youth home. Now in it is located the organization of tourist and hiking nature "Gamayun". (At present, the Palace of Creativity of Children and Youth of Smolensk is located in the house of P. Budnikov.)

Merchants Budnikov is a well-known industrialist, philanthropist, a person who rebuilt a tiled and pottery factory in Smolensk. The story of the fate of the house, the lives of its inhabitants you will learn on the tour. The tiles of the Smolensk land were successful all over the world. Very often, tiles made patterns for the oven, similar to the oven and to this day, you can see, for example, in the estate of M.K. Tenisheva "Flenovo" and in the village Zhukovo in the Administrative building.
