Sochi

Historical and ethnographic square "Fort"

Description:

The history of the city of Sochi begins with primitive times, as these places were not empty and were always inhabited, but on May 3, 1838 Fort Alexandria was founded. It was from this fort that the modern city of Sochi began to be built. To this day, the remains of the fortress wall have been preserved, which is a historical value. When the lands of the Black Sea region were finally conquered, the fort was no longer needed to be dismantled, partly of which the temple of Michael the Archangel was built. In 1911, the Pontic Greek merchant Ivan Politov, aka Ioannis Politi, built a house for himself and took one of the fortress walls as a basis. Ivan’s neighbor was the Greek Hionidi, they together built a staircase march between their land plots, now it is the Hellenic descent. Revolutions and wars have passed, the Hyonidi house has not survived to our days, and the Art Gallery was built from the Politidi house and is now used for its intended purpose. In the courtyard there is a historical and ethnographic square "Fort", reflecting the life, history of the city of Sochi, since the ancient times of the Stone Age and the period when immigrants from different parts of Russia came here before the revolution. The author of the project Sochi archaeologist Andrey Kizilov. It is the ancient culture of these places that is reflected in the expositions in the square, it is part of the fortress wall of the fort made of carved stone blocks more than a thousand years ago - a square, a dolmen, tools of everyday life and labor, an arba, a water mill, an artillery wooden redoubt, an Ubykh courtyard, a Caucasian street hearth. The square opened on August 2, 2017.
