Staritsa

Old Town Museum

Tver region, Staritsa, Staritsky district, Volodarsky street, 38

About the company:

The Staritsky Museum was opened in 1919 in the rectory building of the already closed Staritsky Assumption Monastery.

At the origins of the museum was the grandson of the famous Russian sculptor Peter Karlovich Klodt - Evgeny Alexandrovich Klodt. During the Great Patriotic War in the German-occupied city, one of the richest museums in the region was completely looted.

In 1954, the museum closed and the exhibits collected after the war were transferred to the Tver Museum of Local History and the Tver Regional Art Gallery. The Staritsky Museum of Local Lore was revived as a branch of the Tver State United Museum in 1975 and was located in the building of the Vvedensky Church of the Assumption Monastery. In 1997, the Assumption Monastery became active, so a new building was built for the museum in 2008.

The museum exposition presents materials about the events of the Troubles of the early XVII century, about the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Job – a native of Staritsa and rector of the Staritsky Dormition Monastery, about the reforms of Catherine II, during which the coat of arms and the city plan were approved. Special exhibition complexes tell about the old nobility. A separate hall is dedicated to urban life in Staritsa XIX - early XX century - such important aspects as municipal administration, trade, life, culture and education. Its real decoration is the city interior.

In the conference hall of the museum, local history conferences, meetings with famous countrymen, creative evenings are held.
