Old Oskol Museum of Local Lore

About the company:

The Old Oskol Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest cultural institutions of the Belgorod region. Its history is inextricably linked to the history of the city. At the end of February 1923, the Proletarian Club was opened in Stary Oskol, where various circles worked, including local history. At the club, the Old Oskol branch of the provincial society of local history was organized, and on April 11 it was decided to create a museum of local history in Stary Oskol.

The first director was appointed Nikolai Mikhailovich Rozhdestvensky, a well-known teacher and local historian in the city. The Old Oskol residents actively supported the idea of creating a museum, and exhibits began to come to the funds free of charge. They brought products traditional for Staroskol crafts, old books, household items, finds of different historical epochs.

The most difficult period in the history of the museum is the period of the Great Patriotic War. During the years of occupation, the city suffered great damage. The museum also suffered: almost all the collections were lost. But immediately after the liberation of the city, a decision was made to revive the Staro-Oskol local history museum. On May 1, 1943, Efanov Alexander Ivanovich was appointed director of the museum, on May 16, senior researcher Nikolai Mikhailovich was invited to the scientific organization of the work. By April 20, 1945, 2,400 exhibits had been collected, and about 10,000 people were able to visit the newly opened expositions.

Over the decades of post-war history, the museum has been replenished with thousands of new exhibits. Research staff has expanded. From 1966 to 1995, the museum was located on the first floor of a five-storey residential building on Lenin Street. In 1995, in accordance with the resolution of the Head of Local Self-Government I.A. Gusarov, the museum was transferred to the building, which is a monument of history and architecture - the house of the merchant Likhushin.

The Old Oskol Museum builds its activities on the preservation, study and popularization of monuments of history, culture, human habitat. The main goal is to identify and complete museum collections, their storage, study, publication, implementation of educational and educational activities. At the same time, the museum actively participates in the socio-political and social life of the city. Museum funds, numbering more than 40 thousand exhibits, allow you to fully reflect the history and culture of the region from ancient times to the present, the human environment.

The collected collections are located in 7 permanent exhibition halls. Exhibition activities are also active.
